Interview Format

The Urology ST3 interview is a structured assessment lasting around 1 hour. It is split into four separate stations, each with approximately 13 minutes of questioning and 2 minutes of preparation time.

The format is designed to test both your clinical knowledge and your non-technical skills against the requirements outlined in the national person specification.

The four stations are:

1. Outpatients

Focuses on the consultation process in a clinic setting. You will be expected to demonstrate patient-centred care by exploring symptoms, concerns, and priorities, rather than relying purely on disease labels.

2. Emergencies

Tests your ability to manage acute and potentially high-pressure urological situations. You will be assessed on decision-making, prioritisation, and safe escalation, as well as how you work with a wider team in urgent scenarios.

3. Communication Skills

Designed to explore how you communicate with patients and colleagues in sensitive or challenging situations. Common themes include explaining difficult news, handling complaints, and managing misunderstandings.

4. Clinical Skills

Practical clinical knowledge remains an important component of the interview. Scenarios may require you to demonstrate examination techniques, procedural knowledge and safe interpretation of clinical findings.

Competition and Preparation
Historically, competition for Urology ST3 posts is high, with multiple applicants for each role. To maximise your chances of success, early preparation is essential—approach it with the same focus you would for any competitive exam because that is exactly what the interview actually is. Developing a systematic strategy for each station will help you score consistently and give you the best chance of securing your preferred training post.
